Exhibition Technician

Department: EXHIBIT DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION
Location: Salem, MA

The Peabody Essex Museum, one of the most dynamic art and culture museums in the country, is seeking a temporary Exhibition Technician. Hours can vary from 14 - 35 per week, depending upon the exhibition schedule. The work schedule is set at least 3 weeks in advance. Reporting to the Associate Director of Exhibition and the Exhibition Installation Supervisor, this position provides fabrication and installation assistance and assists with routine maintenance for ongoing and changing exhibition programs. The Exhibition Department collaborates across departments as part of the design, implementation, and installation of temporary and permanent exhibitions, gallery rotations, and other projects assigned and works closely with the Exhibition Installation Supervisor to confirm project needs and assignment of tasks.

Technicians should be skilled in graphic installations (vinyl type install, graphic panels), casework prep (repair and painting) fabrication of object presentation components (plinths, brackets, and supports). The candidate must be able to follow detailed instructions, make informed decisions, and carry out initiatives that represent the needs and goals of the Exhibition Design department in fulfilling its responsibilities.

A BA in Art, a design-related field, or the equivalent combination of education and experience is required. An art museum or art handling experience is preferred. Working experience and ability to operate shop production equipment, tools, and motorized lifts and proficiency in cabinet-making, general carpentry, and working experience with metals, plastics, electronics, gallery lighting, prototyping, and custom fabrication or installations are desired. Successful candidates will have excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work in a collaborative environment with other staff. General computer skills using Microsoft Office Suite. Physical ability and strength to move objects of up to 75 lbs for distances over 100 feet.
